Cartalax is a synthetic tetrapeptide bioregulator consisting of the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Leu (AEDL), developed by the Khavinson group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in Russia. Belonging to the same “Khavinson cytomedin” class as Epithalon (AEDG, pineal), Cortagen (AEDP, cortex), and Pancreagen (KEDW, pancreatic), Cartalax is the tetrapeptide identified by Khavinson and colleagues as the cartilage / connective tissue peptide bioregulator. The compound is proposed to function through tissue-specific gene expression modulation in chondrocyte and connective tissue cell populations. Cartalax has been investigated in the Russian academic literature (Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine; Khavinson and colleagues) for chondrocyte gene expression, extracellular matrix biology, and age-associated cartilage cell function in preclinical research models. Like other Khavinson short-peptide bioregulators, Cartalax is studied primarily as a research tool for tissue-specific short-peptide pharmacology rather than as a defined receptor agonist.
